After attending the Mid-Atlantic Podcast Conference (#MAPcon) September 9-10 in Swedsboro New Jersey, I left with an arsenal or information. One such term I learned of was the “Pivot.” The other Authenticity.

Anthony Hayes Me Myself and I Radio

Anthony Hayes Me Myself and I Radio

We all come to a point in our lives when change is inevitable. For whatever the circumstances, you must adapt your current situation to meet the obstacles at hand. As I approach 3 years (December 2016) since experimenting with a podcast of my own, I realized a much needed pivot is in order.
Every episode I recorded was a learning experience in the many aspects of the audio broadcasting world known as podcasting. This newly learned craft included things such as, but not limited to, technology, marketing and most importantly a better sense of self. I don’t have hundreds of episodes or tens of thousands of listeners. However for those I do mean a lot to me and the evolutionary process at hand is quite evident.
After much deliberation and internal conflict I looked to those around me for advice. Namely my community, the Podcast Discovery Center. I began the PDC as we call it, with fellow podcaster and entrepreneur Scott “the prodigy” Doucet.
I could have thrown in the towel and given up on myself and everything I’ve created thus far. There was only one problem with that. I am a firm believer that we all were put in this universe for a reason. Knowing that, if wasn’t meant to start podcast I would have never become a Podcaster.

I am a Podcaster; not because I want to be, but because I was meant to be.

As time went on, I found myself at times unable to produce hard hitting content. Something I had begun to believe was the only “acceptable” to podcast. I had forgotten how I started in the first place…having no expectations at all. Just me, a headset and my Spreaker mobile studio application.

For more information on hosting your very own podcast with Spreaker (for free) click here.
September 30th is International Podcast Day. The day my Pilot episode will drop. Yes, it is a legitimate recognized day to bring awareness and spread the word about the audio medium know as Podcasting.

So I have weighed my options, time, and resources regarding the future of Me Myself and I Radio-A Self Discovery Podcast hosted by yours truly Anthony Hayes. I have decided to NOT pull the plug, NOR start from scratch but rather press on just as my message suggests. “KEEP ON FLOWING…”

I have no clue what the future holds, but that’s kinda the point of Self Discovery…you encounter new endeavors and obstacles each and everyday.
If you’d like to follow more of my journey and projects the best thing to do is visit my website. There you will have access to podcast episodes, blog posts, and a newsletter to be informed of big things as they happen. Also if you find it in your heart there are some great things on the support page if you would be so inclined to get involved there as well.

How Podcasting and Blogging Changed My Life

By: Anthony Hayes

Over the course of the past year I’ve experienced a slew of life altering affirmations. First and foremost, the birth of my beautiful daughter Violet. A journey you can follow along with in my blog; Raising Violet – The Daddy Diaries.

My thirtieth birthday also happen to fall on the same day as my first Father’s Day, making it an even more special day.

I am extremely fortunate and grateful. I’ve got my career, a loving family, all I was missing was an outlet for my creativity.
Then I found podcasting & blogging.
While listening to my favorite podcasts via Spreaker, “The DiRT” with Marie Lanza and The Tiffany Granath Show, I learned of the podcasting revolution.

Apple says that those billion subscriptions are spread across 250,000 unique podcasts in more than 100 languages, and that more than 8 million episodes have been published in the iTunes Store to date. (Source Macworld)

Me Myself and I Radio Podcast

On a whim, I experimented with the Spreaker iOS app on my smartphone with no direction, nor purpose. As of December 11, 2015 I’ll have been podcasting for two years! Now, 25 episodes and counting I’m beginning to find my voice and others are taking notice. Me Myself and I Radio is an ever-evolving process of Self Discovery just as my message.

With staggering numbers in the hundreds of thousands, it can be difficult to gain momentum in this ever-evolving revolution called Podcasting. Research has told me that podcasting is niche specific. In other words, to have your message heard your must dedicate your show entirely to a specific topic or your area of expertise.

While I understand this concept, I didn’t feel comfortable putting my show in a preverbial box. I feel like Me Myself and I is just broad enough that anyone can find value in it.

We do these challenges to learn about ourselves–by doing. I believe taking action is the best way to discover the habits, skills and knowledge to get ‘Unstuck,’ get on track and reach our goals.

On Me Myself and I Radio I cover topics such as Personal Development, Habits, Fear, Failure, Mindset, Meditation, Productivity, Strengths & Weaknesses, Emotional Intelligence, Personality, Sales, Mindfulness, Productive Thinking, Communication, Self-Awareness, Personal Finances

Podcasting has taught me a lot about Myself, others and the world around us. However I still felt as though I was coming up short. My book, The Science of Being couldn’t get here quick enough and I needed an outlet to strengthen my message until it was published. Enter The Blog.

The Blog(s)

The first of two: Me Myself and I Radio #blog is meant to compliment, and echo the message of the podcast and book. It serves a road map as well as extended show notes for each episode, all wrapped up in my mantra; Keep on Flowing, Just Be…

Raising Violet – The Daddy Diaries

My second blog Raising Violet – The Daddy Diaries is dedicated to my first child. I set out to share my experiences as a first time father with other dads just like me. To my disbelief, this journey has sparked rave reviews and avid readers.

Learning by Doing

In order to sharpen and polish my new found hobbies, I would need learn more about them. I actively do this a number ways:
1.) Google Searches and YouTube Tutorials.
2.) Following, listening, and reading from top industry pioneers.
3.) Attending webinars.
4.) Community groups, Google hangouts.
5.) A lot of Trial and Error.
I’m nowhere close to where I see the magnitude of my message being one day. But I’ve met a bunch of great people along the way who have helped me to learn so much about the Me Myself and I elements. They include Joe Pardo from Dreamers Podcast and Author of 31 Life Changing Concepts, Digital Dads, Chris Wilson & Stephen Warley from the UnStuckable podcast, AC Fuller from writer 2.0 podcast and Author of Anonymous SourceDarienne Dorazio from #MISSIONLove, Sam Shelley, Marie Lanza, and Colin Chambers to name a few. I plan to include these names amongst others to the interview line up on my show. The question is will they accept? Subscribe and tune in to the Me Myself and I Radio Podcast to find out!

The Number One Way for Managing Stress

By: Anthony Hayes

Keep on Flowing, Just Be…

Just BREATHE…

Sounds simple enough right? Not quite. Breathing instinctively for life and control of breath for emotional balance are two different processes. Oftentimes we underestimate the power of a breath. We take breathing for granted. Meanwhile, this single element is the benefactor of all existence. The question is can you find a balance…?

Some years ago my therapist gave me a simple stress test. It used a short questionnaire and color coded card which worked off body heat. It’s a chemically treated strip that changes color with changes in temperature. The more relaxed and less stressed you are the more dilated the blood vessels.

The importance of the outcome of the exercise became apparent to me and my overall well-being. Considering I was more stressed then I anticipated, as this was not the main purpose of my visit that day. We all get anxious at times. Usually over something silly and small but to us it is a very big deal. It may come on so rapidly, without warning there is no preparing for it. Or is there?

The timing can be unpredictable, however the series of events leading up to a stressful moment, or trigger, is usually par for the course. Here is some common triggers I’ve come across.

  • Rushing – Nothing is worth rushing to do. Set your clock ahead 12-15 minutes. Despite what you may think your do NOT work well under pressure. No one does. In fact, studies show an increase of adrenaline in times of emotional distress is the bodies response to this overwhelming situation. As a result, we feel a sense of accomplishment. Meanwhile we just completely overloaded our brain ultimately exhausting our most precious resource. So why 12-15 minutes? 5 minutes is pointless. 10 minutes may account for some variables, but not all. I’ve found around 15 minutes is my personal sweet spot for completing a project or arriving some where I need to be.
  • Situational – Clutter and disorganization causes me unwanted stress. I do my best to tidy up as I go. Admittedly, at times I too get behind on my tasks. Things happen. But I do my best to take time to breath just before I anticipate a problem will arise.
  • Energy – Have you ever walked into a room, all is quiet, cold, and everyone around you suggests by mere body language that something is off. As it turns out Steve’s cat Fluffy used the last of her nine lives that morning and got ran over as he backed out of his driveway. An unfortunate event certainly but no one even knew Steve had a cat in the first place. The universe is made up of these energies. From science with protons to neutrons, and emotional energy as well. Steer clear of the unnecessary ones.

The Solution to managing ALL Stress

“BREATH INTENTIONALLY WITH INTENTION”

Even if it means excusing yourself for a ‘bathroom’ break, take that moment. Keep on Flowing, Just Be…Just BREATHE.

  1. Close your eyes (if surrounding environment permits)
  2. Inhale deeply through your nose, and exhale completely out of your mouth.
  3. By the third breath begin to subtly soften your exhalation.
  4. By the fifth breath begin to subtly soften your inhalation.
  5. Breaths 6-10 count each time you inhale and exhale.
  6. Open your eyes, have a stretch, and something similar to a yawn. Either separately or simultaneously.

In closing, it is not a perfect system. However with time, and practice, it can be the deciding factor to better manage stress.

The Science of Being – Me, Myself, and I

By: Anthony Hayes

The past 10 years have encompassed some of the darkest most trying times of my life. To be perfectly honest at times, I didn’t think I’d be here today. I’ve fought battles of depression, self medicating, and divorce all before the ripe old age of 30 (which I turned last June). But somehow, somewhere, in vast universe something was watching over me. A true testament of will, perseverance, and heart. I never gave up, always wanting to understand what I was going through more thoroughly. Whether it be reading, research, mediation or doing creative things like writing The Science of Being…Our best days lie ahead of us.

Between the years of 2004-2014 I documented my journey and battle with clinical depression, anxiety, add, self medicating, and bouts of insomnia. After several working titles, this way of life which is obtainable by all of us, I call “The Science of Being – Me, Myself, and I .”
It is focused on overcoming your obstacles despite your circumstances. My mission is to help better myself, in doing so; help, motivate and inspire others to do the same.  As a result, I write on personal development, resources and tools for self-actualization. On occasion, I blog about stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into one of these categories.

It the end it all paid off. For the past was my training for today and I’ve never felt more complete.

Writing with Guest Jason Stocks

Me Myself and I Radio Episode 17 show notes

Writing with Guest Jason Stocks

iTunes | Listen Now! | Player | Spreaker | Stitcher|

On this episode of the Me Myself and I podcast, I welcome my very first guest Jason Stocks. Jason and I discuss the benefits of writing, some history, and explain why we need to incorporate more writing in our daily lives. In addition we share how writing has helped us overcome our obstacles. We’ve got lots to talk about and less than half an hour to do it in_so lets get into Me, Myself, and I shall we?

Jason Stocks was born in Arkansas and raised in Mississippi. He received his BFA from Goddard College where he studied under the direction of New Hampshire Poet Laureate Walter Butts and novelist Laurie Foos, and his MFA from Solstice of Pine Manor College, where he worked with Cave Canum Fellow, and Somerville, Massachusetts, Poet Laureate Nicole Terez Dutton. His work has appeared in numerous journals such as Calliope, Blaze Vox, Exterminating Angel Press and Confrontation.  He has had poems anthologized by Nazar Look, a Romanian publisher, which were translated into several languages including Crimean Tartar. He had internships at Both Elephant Rock Books and Drunken Boat Literary magazine. Presently he lives in Florida with his pregnant, long term fiance, their chihuahua Jelly Bean, a super sweet kingsnake named Sophie and two tarantulas. (Connect with Jason: Facebook, Google “Jason Stocks Poetry” )

Q&A:

AH: What obstacles has writing helped you overcome?

Answer: Depression, Pain, Criticism, Death & Animosity, Relationships, Developing a skill-set, All around

JS: The death my brother. It is in fact therapeutic. It doesn’t matter if you are doing it for fun, for a expression or as a release. It’s a good skill to have to communicate even if your the only one that’s going to read this.

AH: Why is writing a necessity in our daily lives and why don’t more people do it?

Answer: Fear, Criticism and opinions, Vulnerability, Rejection

JS: I think people are scared because you do bury your emotions. Like you said the white space is unbiased, so we pour our feelings out on the page…and we are scared of criticism. We are scared of criticism in every aspect of our lives.

AH: What advice would you give those who want to incorporation more writing into their daily lives?

Answer: Journal, Just do it, Write everyday, Read, Don’t be afraid.

JS: Start with a journal. I think most people are afraid to write because maybe they think they haven’t lived enough life yet to have anything to write about.

AH: What resource, website, or book can you recommend to people that want to improve their writing skills?

Answer: Classical literature, Charles Dickens (Great Expectations, Tale of two cities) Poets and Writers (www.p&w.org), The Poetry Foundation, The Art of Poetry (Shira Wolosky), Steven King (On Writing), The Paris Review, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Bret Easton Ellis, Enter contests

JS: You can’t understand modern literature unless you know the roots.

Notable Quotations:

Anthony Hayes – “If you want to be good you have to surround yourself with greatness.”
“The white space is unbiased. It’s not going to judge you.”
“It’s a great tool that really; across the spectrum anybody can use at any given point in their life. ”
“You can never master something unless you are able to teach it to somebody else.”

Jason Stocks – “Writers are the people that go against the grain.”
“It’s not the story your tell, its the way you tell it.”
“I think people are scared.”
“People are forgetting how to write.”
“The thing about poetry is that every word matters.”
“It’s not a matter of how well read you are, its matter of how willing you are to be patient with the author.”
“I think you have to release your expectations. Let go of your expectations of normality.”
“Anything worth keeping is worth fighting hard to understand.”
Final Thoughts:

In any context, it seems writing is highly under utilized, invaluable resource. Anyone can write, but not everybody will. Whether it is a journal, letter, poem, short story or daily to-do list you will get to better know yourself through your thoughts. Seeing everything you have been thinking in black and white makes your vision unclouded and unbiased. Suddenly your world will become a bit more clear, your goals more attainable, more tangible.

Your Challenge:

Start a daily journal. Over the course of the next 7 days document the events and feelings you experience. Sometimes it helps to place a pad and pen at your bedside and recap the day before you go to sleep each evening. If you do not normally make use of a to-do list, make one each morning. Cross out each task as your complete it. At the end of 7 days review your entries and findings. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What did I learn?
  2. Was my time well spent?
  3. Did I complete my tasks?
  4. Did I set new goals?
  5. Will I continue some of these practices going forward?

ABOUT @ahayes_mmi

Thanks for clicking the URL in my Twitter profile.

I am the author of The Science of Being – Me Myself and I. It is a self-published memoir (of sorts), that I wrote documenting my battle with depression from 2000-2014. I have submitted several of its chapters as short stories, to number of literary magazines and contests across the country.

This is a blog post specifically written just for you. With the limitation some social media outlets put on the allotted number of characters (140-160), it is difficult to really network at all. With the constant updating, blurbs, and congested feeds, you may miss something that would have otherwise resonated with you. That is why you are here. To learn three things:

  • Who is Anthony Hayes?
  • What is The Science of Being?
  • What is Me, Myself, and I?

Anthony Hayes

Hi I’m Anthony and thank you for connecting. Outside my regular 9-5, I am an Author/Writer, Podcaster, Blogger, and newly appointed Father to a beautiful baby girl. I started writing back in the 8th grade, mostly poetry. My way of being the modern day Romeo, at times.

I reside in West Palm Beach where I chase my passions, dreams, and aspirations under the sunny Florida skies. I am a huge car enthusiast and have competed in custom car shows on a national level. Walking away with 4 first place trophies and several other awards in my class.

I originally aspired to be a professional mixed martial arts fighter. I trained with some of the most elite instructors, trainers, and alongside some of the best athletes in the world. The universe however had a different plan. A majority of my core values have been a result of disciplines their philosophies within.

The Science of Being

Between the years of 2004-2014 I documented my journey and battle with clinical depression, anxiety, add, self medicating, and bouts of insomnia. After several working titles, this way of life which is obtainable by all of us, I call “The Science of Being – Me, Myself, and I .”

Me, Myself, and I Radio

I also have a podcast called, Me Myself and I, for which I cover similar topics. My show hosted by Spreaker web and mobile application, but available also on iTunes and Stitcher Radio for download. I plan to have some awesome guests going forward.

I typically podcast bi-weekly. To make sure you don’t miss my newest posts, you can subscribe via RSS or e-mail.

I also wrote a blog for the podcast that can be found here.

The Science of Being

The Science of Being

A journey; A way of life

Please Visit memyselfandiradio.com

Please Visit memyselfandiradio.com

Go on a journey with me through the trials, tribulations, and moments of enlightenment I experienced in my early to mid 20s with “The Science of Being.”

Everyone has their story but I would like to share mine with you and one day, the world. It gets a bit dark along the way but we will get through it together. I am the product of a divorced marriage but lead a great childhood nonetheless.

However, in 2004 a switch went off in my head that would forever change me and what I was to become. I’ve fought battles of depression, self medicating, divorce, and always came out to be victorious. It is with a sense of enlightenment I now possess that I was able to organize my journey on paper.

I’m not trying to sell a message, I’m trying to deliver it. After several working titles “The Science of Being” is in its final stages. With your help and contribution I will be able to share my story with others having similar struggles. Together we can show them the purest light even in the most crimson of skies. The Science of being is a way of life. It’s about flowing and traversing through your obstacles no matter how vast they seem. In the end the universe has a path for all. If you enjoyed the work of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s “Prozac Nation” you will enjoy my story. Lizzy is a great inspiration of mine and her memoir was the final push I needed to get this done. Her story was so compelling, so honest.
